THE HUNGRY TIDE - AMITHAV GOSH
REVIEW ON THE BOOK: The Hungry Tide
I WAS THOROUGHLY SCRUTINIZING THE LIBRARY WHEN I SAW THIS BOOK. ITS COVER PAGE GREATLY IMPRESSED ME.It's a good book by AMITHAV GHOSH.
I haven't gone through other novels by Amithav sir, but this novel did make me want to.
Amithav Gosh is a writer from Kolkata. This novel too is based on Kolkata but the lesser-known side of it.
Gives inside story on the hidden plains of Ganges. To be particular it speaks a lot on west Bengal and Sundarbans. The treacherous river there and their tributaries. It gives vivid details on the lives of fishermen in the Bengal region which is awe-inspiring. This book is packed with real knowledge and shows us the reality. The trouble the people face there due to ferocious tiger and their taboos on the forest spirit.
A lot of terms like marichjhapi (massacre in hungry tide), gosabha come in the book which makes it preserve the originality of the region.

The two main characters in this book are Piyali Roy (Piya) and Kanai Dutt. Piya, an American cetelogist of Indian parentage is heading towards Sundarbans only to study dolphins. Kanai is going to the island of Lusibari for the first time after many years under the compulsion of his Aunt Nilima. Nirmal, Kanai's uncle had left him a letter or perhaps a daily journal only to be opened by him. There is an adventure, suspense, thrill in this novel. Kanai learns a lot and unravels many secrets left unanswered by his uncle.
If i would be mentioning any further i would be spoiling the whole plot of the story, believe me I've give away roughly 5 percent of the story now. There are characters like Fokir, Kusum,Moyna about whom I've not spoken.

This book doesn't rank my list from what I've read so far as there were many times i got bored and thought of giving up reading but suddenly certain plots from nowhere would motivate me to move on.
